Valentines Tradition for One
"To fall in love with yourself is the first secret to happiness." -- Robert Morely
Remember the little notes on Valentine’s that you used to give when you were a kid? You know, the ones you’d fill out with cute handwritten messages to all your classmates?
While this tradition likely ended for you many years ago, I invite you to start a new one to help you live a more passionate life every day of the year.
Make a Desire List
If you want to feel fully alive, you have to connect with, and stay connected to, your deepest longings. It can be easy to get lulled into a comfortably numb place by the busyness of our lives, and forget what matters most to our soul.
Yes, most of us do lead busy lives, myself included. But ask yourself:
“What small thing might I let go of that would create a little space in my life to pursue the desire that tugs at my heart?”
I say “small” because too often we imagine having to make a huge life change to accommodate this need. Anything big feels scary — and undoable.
All it takes is one little step to get started. If you love animals, visit a local shelter and volunteer for an hour. If dancing is what makes your heart soar, make a CD of your favorite ten songs and find a place to let your body move. If you love the energy of space or the beauty of architecture, buy a magazine this afternoon and read it cover to cover.
So this Valentines Day, make a Desire List and keep it handy. Don’t buy into the initial temptation to brush this off with, “I’m too tired,” or “I haven’t a clue.” Push past the part of you that resists change – or going after what you truly desire – and make the list!
If you want to lead a wildly successful, passionate life, you need to do things that turn up the juice in your life.
Share Your Desires
Share your Desire List. Tell the people who care about you what you want more of in your life. When you do, do it with enthusiasm and excitement. And keep doing it.
The more energy you give to your desires, the quicker they start to materialize.
Keep Good Company
Put yourself in the company of other brave and adventurous people who are unwilling to settle for anything less than a passion-filled life. As Stephen Covey discusses in his classic book on personal change, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, we become who we hang out with.
We are all such unique, creative beings who long to express our hidden desires. Along with sharing your love with others this Valentines, do something for your sweet self by connecting with your own desires too.
Love,
Steph Tait
