As busy professional, yoga teacher, and mom in the middle of my second pregnancy, I now fully appreciate the word: “priorities”. Life is “busy” as some would say (although I prefer “abundant”). Either way I have learnt that my health, and now baby’s health, take priority… so all of the other wonderful things that make life enjoyable come next! And, as an over achiever I am not interested in just having good health, I am talking about abundant health, inner smile radiant health! So for this, I turn to where I always have, to yoga and meditation. That is, for me yoga has always been there as my best reminder to be healthy, happy, and grateful. And in pregnancy, life is abundant, my body is changing, hormones are flying, and I have a little human growing inside me… I need this reminder even more.

Chair yoga is a great way to introduce people to yoga especially those who are not athletically inclined or haven’t regularly exercised. I recently taught a yoga class in a boardroom of a corporation to a group of people who were absolutely new to yoga. After 30 minutes of stretching, breathing and a short meditation, they all felt more energized, grounded and ready to face the rest of the day sitting at their desks.

“Be careful what you water your dreams with. Water them with worry and fear and you will produce weeds that choke the life from your dream. Water them with optimism and solutions and you will cultivate success.” – Lao Tzu
What will you spend time cleaning out this Spring? Old clothes? Paperwork? Your garden? Maybe get a new haircut...
Oftentimes, when we tackle our spring cleaning, we focus on tangible items in our life that we can clear out for fresh beginnings. After all, things got pretty cluttered in the dark days of Winter...What if, this Spring, you spent as much time cleaning up your thoughts, too?

In life and in yoga, we’re always on the go. From place to place, from pose to pose, each day the flow is constant, only slowing down when we allow it to. And similar to life, where the pace is rapid, often times in our yoga practice, poses are gone before we know it, leaving us wanting more…just one more try. Everyone can benefit from yoga, no matter what you bring to the mat, but how do you know when you should seek private instruction?

Some 13 years ago, word on the street was that Vinyasa Yoga (aka Flow Yoga) was the “IT” thing to help people access inner wisdom and find true happiness. While I became suspicious (and still am!) of yoga teachers who would make abstract analogies of how Hanuman, the monkey God, was going to save the day, I was open to the possibility that if my breath and body moved as “one” then just maybe my life would align and get into the flow as well. And so I jumped into the flow of Vinyasa Yoga.

"Yoga has given me the opportunity to go inward. The moments of silence between the inhales and exhales is what my body and mind crave. To simply just be present in the stillness and to let go. Inhale… Let… Exhale… Go. Letting go is my path to freedom." - Jen, YYoga 200 Hour TT graduate
I had often wondered if The Self Help or How To book was out there, or better yet, a map that plotted my life journey so I could find comfort in the fact I knew where I was headed. I asked myself this question during the numerous times I browsed the shelves of bookstores and eagerly flipped through those that looked promising. I dreamed of the day I would uncover the ultimate guide. The encyclopedia of knowledge that would tell me the secrets of living with chronic pain. And of course the elusive magic wand would be included; nicely tucked inside the bookcover flap.

“To change your life: start immediately; do it flamboyantly; no exceptions." -- William James
Through yoga, I started having these moments of clarity. Ok I know why I'm here. To be an entertainer. This is what my purpose is (my dharma). This is what I've always known. From childhood I've always wanted to play make-believe, to entertain people, and help uplift people though music and performance. And it is just so clear to me when I do yoga, when I’m listening to my heart’s call.
Also this feeling of personal power, and not from an egotistical sense but when you just know your own worth and power-- I remember being in a heart-opening crescent lunge in Nico's power class and getting these strong, resonating messages to follow my dream. Then, I realized that you know what, you need to EXIST in this realization, and just take full advantage of what you've been given and make it happen Instead of waiting for it to happen to you. YOU have to make it happen.

Dealing with pain, whether it is chronic or acute can be incredibly taxing on our bodies, minds and souls. There are many avenues to explore while dealing with pain, but for long-term relief, the approach must be a holistic one. Treatment for pain is more effective when we look at the bigger picture. There tends to be a vicious cycle between feeling physical pain, which leads to stress, which leads to a toxic outlook thus making it harder to heal. The good news is there are many ways to restore optimal health, but it starts with an open mind and a willingness to feel better.
Yoga for pain management:
Yoga can bring tremendous relief for many reasons. The more aware we become of our bodies, the more we are able to source out the actual root of the pain. Practices like Anusara Yoga as well as Pilates focus deeply on alignment, which can help bring physical ailments to light. By correcting our posture and strengthening our muscles to support our skeleton, pain can lessen by getting stronger and increasing flexibility. It can also create healthier muscle patterns and undo damaging habits.

When we set off to run our first of 420 marathons for the year, this was the quote of the day. Quite fitting, I thought, given the distance ahead.
My run partner Matt Hill & I shared a common dream to inspire a continent by conquering an endurance expedition, in a way that had never been done before. We wanted the expedition to be “unfathomable” to draw attention to the important cause we were running for: the health of our planet.

Alex Mazerolle is a yoga & pilates teacher with YYoga. Click here for her upcoming class schedule!
My first pilates class was part of a dance summer camp when I was 13. The girls and I saw it on the schedule and jokingly called it "pilots." I remember being bored to death and at that age, not having enough focus or concentration to grasp the method.
PILATES (pronounced pih-law-teez) is a non-impact strength training system of exercise. It's focus is on quality versus quantity. Pilates is practiced from a place of deep mindfulness and attention to alignment. When done correctly there is little need for excessive amounts of repetition, thus making the method extremely proficient.
Fours years later I found pilates again doing private lessons on the suggestion of a physiotherapist. In attempts to heal an injured spine, I fell in love with it's therapeutic ways and found great relief for my suffering body.
As a teacher, I see many people just like me years ago. Suffering from back pain, unaware of their bodies and seeking relief. Issues like lack of core support, pelvic instability, muscular imbalances, poor posture, and lack of body awareness all effect the health of the spine. These are the issues that the Pilates method specializes in helping people improve.

"Thoughtful consumption and how we leave the Earth and its resources for future souls is a mindful yogic principle of karmic consciousness, and this translates as ahimsa, or non-injury." Sonja Picard
In keeping with Valentine's Day, The Double Lotus Heart symbolizes the relationship of the divine eternal couple, Sitaram. The lotus represents the unfolding of possibilities, purity and eternal renewal.
We know many yogis practice thoughtful consumption in their every day lives. It can be tough to remain mindful of this around holidays like Valentine's Day - when giving gifts is a way of expressing appreciation for your loved one.
We have the perfect opportunity for you to not only win your loved one a gorgeous Double Lotus Heart necklace from The Sonja Picard Collection (valued at $200), but to give a gift that shares the concept of 'seva', or service. This concept is highly valued at The Sonja Picard Collection (SPC) and their Karma Yoga Jewelry line forwards 100% of net proceeds to one of five not-for-profit organizations yearly.

You've heard the maxim that “yoga does every body good,” right?
Navigating through all the different adaptations and interpretations of yoga can be like the Goldilocks Phenomenon: the goal is to find a yoga class (and the right teacher) that is just right. But just like everything else, it takes practice.
Many people give yoga a try, give it their all (well, at least during their first class) and then give it up. Barely able to make it out of the class, they wake up in the morning crawling out of bed as though they had aged a decade or more.
Yoga does a body good. Does it? “Bend before you break,” they say, but after your first class you need to take a break before you bend ever again. Perhaps the class you tried wasn't the right option for what you were looking for?

0 commentsTalking Intention with Rachelle
Intention is a frequent word in yoga classes, in spiritual study, and especially at the beginning of a new year. But what is it?
Throughout the class she intuited, as yoga instructors often magically do, exactly when our minds were wandering. Then she would remind us of our intention: Breathe.
The first time I heard a YYoga instructor ask, in class, “What is your intention today?” I remember thinking: I’m here. I’ve got my water. I can do a decent camel, but inversions scare the crap out of me, and, yes, I have a difficult relationship with chair pose. There’s more?
I didn’t really know what intention meant. It felt complicated.
Thinking about intention released an instant, potatoey cloud from my Pandora’s box of bad and uglies: my secret fantasy about becoming that girl on the other mat (the one with the dragon tattoo/incredible half-moon pose/insert-enviable-attribute here), my desire to be a better person (read: you’re not good enough yet), help the world (you’re not doing enough), be more successful (what about that novel?).
Like dominos, each thought knocked hard on the edge of the next: lose weight, make more money, behave more appropriately when cut off in traffic.
Then I heard the instructor’s voice, as if through a fine mist: “Intention,” she said, “can be as simple as a word: Breathe.”

Whether we are balancing on one foot, establishing the breath where the inhalation mirrors the length of the exhalation, or sitting in meditation, one of the goals is to catch a glimpse of the quality of balance and equanimity – you know, it's the state of being calm, stable and composed, especially under stress/ both on and off the mat.

Give the gift of Health ... for your loved ones and the planet
Live simply. Live healthy. Live the good life! This holiday, help your loved ones live the good life by giving gifts that help them consume less, preserve natural resources and simply feel good. When buying gifts this Holiday Season be aware of the meaning behind gift giving rather than focussing on material value. Reflect on where your energy and money is being spent and give with purpose.
If you're looking for a thoughtful gift that will help you or your loved ones relax during this busy season, you won't have to stretch your wallet to help somebody else stretch their body. There are just a few days left to purchase our YYoga holiday memberships (5 classes for $50 in 5 weeks) so head on down to your nearest YYoga Center Guest Services for this gift that keeps on giving: the gift of health.
And while you’re there, be sure to stop by the eco-boutique for those last minute gifts (new shipments arriving as we speak). Undecided? How about a YYoga Gift Card! Available in any amount, this card can be used at any center for products in the eco-boutique, yoga or wellness services. Give the gift of health and help your loved ones manage holiday stress off the mat as well as on.
Don’t forget it's that time of year when we glance over our shoulders to reflect on the year past and, more importantly, look forward to the ambitions of the coming year. It's a time to reflect on the changes we want (or need) and resolve to follow through on those passionate, optimistic, and sometimes desperate pledges we make to change ourselves for the better - and healthier. Here are our Top Five Practices for (Positive) Change as we journey into the New Year:
Read moreSpirit of the Season
The Holiday Season is a time for celebrating the gifts of life and simply being with loved ones. However, as we scramble to wrap up 2010 and prepare for the onset of a new decade, the holidays can also be a time of year where stress and anxiety are heightened. Whether shopping for gifts, travelling, financial stresses, Winter Blues or even dealing with uncomfortable family situations, it can be easy to lose sight of the magic of the Season. In the current swirl of commercial and social pressures, it's easy to forget the meaningfulness of this time of year when holiday stress leads to impatience, feeling tired and being overwhelmed.
It's also the time of year where there's a tendency to put our own health and wellness on the back burner until the Holiday Season is through. We tend to shove our yoga mats into a corner and instead parade from one holiday party to the next succumbing to the temptation to (over?) indulge in holiday sweets and treats along the way. By the time New Year’s Eve rolls around, we're well ready for those New Year's resolutions and reversing the tide of over-consumption.
In the hopes of a healthy and happy Holiday Season, consider taking time out for yourself. One of the easiest ways to reduce this stress is to simply relax and, fortunately, yoga offers the perfect remedy with techniques to ease your holiday worries and energize the body. Yoga offers ancient wisdom on staying calm in challenging situations, while also fostering a sense of happiness and harmony.
While yoga has a strong effect on the physical body, it has an even stronger effect at regulating the emotions and subtle energies of the body. The meditative and mindfulness practices of any type of yoga are excellent tools to bring awareness to our emotional states to help conquer holiday stress. Yoga also teaches us to look inside and to focus less on the material things and more on what truly makes us happy.

108 Little Reminders of Love, Luck and Strength
According to Tiny Devotions, a Canadian designer of handmade malas, each necklace is made with a different intention and each bead represents something special and unique to its wearer. In their wonderful informational video, Tiny Devotions explains that the distinctive beads (heavily grooved and reminiscent of a walnut shell) are Rudraksha seeds which come from trees grown in only a few remote areas of the world including India and Bali. Known for spiritual healing, Rudraksha help their wearers to set intentions, and can be used together with the practices of meditation and mantra to achieve grounding and inner peace. Tiny Devotions also intersperses their strings of Rudraksha beads with pearls and semi-precious gemstones, which allows you to further personalize your intention and makes your mala truly unique. Different crystals have different energetic qualities, and malas allow you to wear these special stones right next to your heart.

Author Elizabeth Gilbert structured her bestselling book, Eat, Pray, Love, around them. What are “they”, you might ask? Why, they’re mala beads. Seasoned yogis will be quite familiar with this spiritual adornment. But if you’re a newcomer like me, it’s likely that you’ve come across strings of these beautiful beads before and been too shy to ask: what are these necklaces and why do people wear them?
Malas are sacred necklaces that have been worn for thousands of years in traditions of yoga, Buddhism, and Hinduism. They’re traditionally made with 108 beads – 108 being a very significant and auspicious number – plus one extra guru stone intended to thank teachers, parents, friends, and any other extraordinary mentors you’ve had along the way. Malas are known to bring a variety of positive benefits to their wearers, including luck, good energy, healing, health, strength, and love.

Spread the Love with 5 Days of Yogi Stocking Stuffers
I don’t know about you, but it gets to be a certain time of December and I find myself swept up in a tidal wave of mirth, good spirits, LOVE, twinkle lights, and traditional holiday music.
Especially the music. No matter where I go, my head is full of it, and sometimes when I’m feeling especially playful (the happy result of accumulated Flow, Anusara, and Pilates classes), I find myself mentally re-writing lyrics to the tune of anything and everything. Why not?
Break down just about any holiday-themed song and you’ll find that the underlying message is one of love, or if not love directly, then some expression of it. Let us not forget that this is theperfect time of year to show that special someone how much you appreciate them in the form of a gift, or a series of small gifts. (I.e. spreading the love!)
So without further ado, allow me to share with you my most recent rendition of “The Twelve Days of Christmas” entitled, “The Five Days of Yogi Stocking Stuffers”, as inspired by what’s in YYoga Eco-Boutique!

1 commentsMe, Myself and Alicia
For the most part, nutrition isn't a major minefield for me. There's no sulphate in my dried apricots; my olive oil is cold pressed and my grains are whole and then some. My own personal downfall is a constant desire to inhale cake, kicking most of my carefully considered vitamins to the curb.

"Last night the moon came dropping its clothes in the street. I took it as a sign to start singing, falling up into the bowl of sky." Rumi
I often think of Terry McBride, co-founder of YYoga, the way he described himself to me when he was a child, living in Richmond.
He'd lie on his bed at night, transister radio on the window sill, antenna picking up the invisible soundwaves, music pouring in to his room as he stared, the way all children do, at the silver, unreachable moon.

1 commentsWhat is Reiki and how can I benefit from it?
Reiki is one of the most ancient healing methods known to humanity.
Our chakras, the major energy enters located on the body, can be small, unbalanced, over-stimulated and not working to the best of their ability.
Reiki translated means: Rei: Spiritual/Universal; Ki: life-force/energy. It is a system of channeling the universal energy though the hands and with the use of the ancient, sacred, healing symbols.
We are all made up of energy and energy is all around us. Sometimes our lives are so busy and stressful that this energy can be manifested to be negative and even toxic.

Experience the Power of a Yin Yoga Practice
Feeling Stiff? Trouble Sleeping? Experience the Power of a Yin Yoga Practice
Yin gains its name because it corresponds with yin attributes, which are the opposite of yang (ie. substance opposed to activity, passive stretching and postures vs. active movement). Yin is often a preparation for meditation because of its soft, slow, and static nature. You'll notice at YYoga centers, Yin is scheduled late in the evening. This is because Yin is a great set up for meditation, and can be very restful in preparation for sleeping.
If you already have a regular practice, maybe you're looking to expand your yoga experience; if you're new to yoga, maybe you're looking for a class that will gently target connective tissues and engage in static stretching. Either way, yin yoga passes on a number of benefits that will serve your mind, body, and soul.

Read more25 Years of Music We Love
YYoga co-founder and Nettwerk Music Group CEO, Terry McBride's journey to the yoga mat has been inextricably linked to his journey through music.
"Now I get it," he says.
His first real encounter with yoga came backstage, touring North America with his artist, Sarah McLachlan and Lilith Fair. For about 90 minutes a day she would simply disappear. It irritated him. Lilith was a huge production. There were things to do, decisions to be made.
"All I knew was that the door would be closed. For 90 minutes, my artist wasn't available to me."
Sarah would emerge, centred, non-plussed, open, ready for whatever Terry might throw at her, for whatever the show might bring. He didn't get it. At least not until he took his first yoga class a decade later.

Each year many of us struggle to come up with the right gift, a thoughtful gift, often for a person that seems to have everything! When you find joy in giving something meaningful, it can be incredibly rewarding. By giving the gift of yoga, you could not only introduce someone to a healthy lifestyle, a new way of being, and a community – you could spark a passion within someone and ultimately change a life. 9 commentsFinding Ground: The World of Ashes and Snow
According to artist Gregory Colbert, “An elephant with his trunk raised is a ladder to the stars; a breaching whale is a ladder to the bottom of the sea.” His photographs are a ladder to his dreams, and his vision is a ladder to you. Discover the timelessness and awe-inspiring mystery of Ashes and Snow, a world where grounding and connectedness is found through our spiritual kinship with the animal kingdom.
An elephant raises his trunk to the sky in one, majestic sweep. A flock of birds, startled, create a thrilling rhythm with the beat of their wings as they take off, forming geometric patterns in the air. Deeply submerged in the waters beneath, a whale sings and we feel their song in the core of our being. This is the world of Ashes and Snow: a world without beginning or end; which is neither here nor there, past nor present. Animals are not subject to our modern kingdom; rather, we are invited to rediscover the groundedness we once enjoyed when we lived in harmony with animals, sharing language, gestures, and artistic sensibilities.
